Chelsea suffer through lack of discipline

Terry slips and the cup is lost.

As a player and a leader I have the utmost respect for John Terry the Chelsea captain. It was cruel that he should miss a penalty that ultimately cost Chelsea the Champions League.

Having said that, the constant harrassment of the referee that Terry showed again in last night’s final did the player no credit whatsoever. In that Chelsea side he is not alone. Each and every time a decision went against Chelsea or a Manchester United player committed a foul, Terry was joined by Ashley Cole, Didier Drogba and Claude Makelele in surrounding and shouting at the referee.

This could be construed as team spirit and togetherness but I prefer to call it a total lack of discipline. It was through that lack of discipline that a scuffle broke out on the pitch, entirely down to Chelsea players, and Drogba was sent off. He would have taken a penalty. Would Chelsea have won?

It seems likely that Avram Grant will move on from his role as Chelsea manager. I really hope that whoever takes over can control a group of players who, to me, seem to be out of control.

Chelsea are a fine team with some great players but one of the main reasons they have twice lost out to Manchester United is that they are led on the pitch by a man who should be sent off in most games he plays.

They say that a captain should lead by example. A look at Chelsea will show that sadly, that is exactly what John Terry does.
